Currently on the horizon, I am looking forward to USA Network's Burn Notice (I really enjoyed the pilot episode), FX's new crime drama Damages, BBC America's interesting new show Jekyll, David Duchovny's new program on Showtime: Californication, and SCI-FI Channel's new take on Flash Gordon. Of these shows I am actually enjoying Flight of the Conchords most - as odd as it sounds, I just like light humorous programming in the summer.īut the summer has just started, and there are still plenty of new shows to get addicted to. Currently I am trudging through the genuinely craptastic Pirate Master, enjoying the second season of Big Love, questioning why I haven't stopped watching John from Cincinnati, am being charmed by Flight of the Conchords, and debating whether I would take Promicin or not while watching The 4400. time to either watch some television programs I'm not too invested in, or catch up on what I missed from last season.

As for that guilty pleasure reality series glut we get in the summer that I mentioned above, it spreads across cable too of course, and I have to admit, I will definitely catch the next campy season of Who Wants to Be a Superhero? This is a show which is incredibly goofy, but very amusing. I also have DVD sets of Brotherhood and Rome (yeah, I know that one's not coming back) to watch. My hope is to watch every single episode of Scrubs this summer, a show I enjoy when I occasionally see it, but have never followed on a regular basis. Meanwhile, I hope to do some DVD catch up on some other series this summer.

Plus it has Jeffrey Combs ( Re-Animator) and Summer Glau ( Firefly) playing a couple! That's a selling point right there.

It's perfect summer viewing as a sort of well done airplane novel of a TV show, complete with government agencies, would-be prophets on the run, comas, love stories, and of course lots of super powers. 4400 isn't a spectacular show, but it's a very solid one. This is a solid science fiction series that has delivered a nicely compelling story for four years, while always existing under the radar - it's a bit sad that Heroes has come on in the past year with a very similar basic concept about normal folks developing special abilities and gotten the kind of ratings and buzz 4400 can only dream of. However, I am excited to have The 4400 back. Summer gives us so much to watch on network TV: American Inventor, America's Got Talent, America's Got Inventors… Okay, that last one isn't real, but is it perhaps inevitable? Sad to say, network TV has become a bit of a wasteland in the summer, as repeats of popular shows (which I'd welcome as a nice catching up opportunity for some shows) have been supplanted by C-grade reality series, few of which are worth checking out except on a completely silly level - Hi, Pirate Master!

In the coming weeks I'm looking forward to the return of Doctor Who and Psych, and I'm curious enough about Burn Notice, The Kill Point, Flash Gordon and Californication to check them out. I still have quite a few to watch yet, but of the ones I've looked at so far my favorites are Chuck (a very fun and funny take on an Alias-like world of spies) and Bionic Woman (very well done remake with a lot of potential). Other than that, lately I've been going through the pile of fall pilots the networks have sent out. I also have Flight of the Conchords waiting on the DVR but haven't checked that out yet.

It's completely bizarre and totally nonsensical at times, but I keep thinking David Milch is going somewhere with all of this. I've checked out John from Cincinnati but I don't know what I think yet, even two episodes in. I didn't think about it before listing them here, but apparently I'm all about comedy this summer. There are just a handful of summer series I'm watching right now: I get my political and entertainment news updates from The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, The Soup and The Showbiz Show weekly comedic fixes from Entourage, The Loop, Live at Gotham and The Graham Norton Show and a reality fix (mixed with comedy) from Last Comic Standing.
